The August SBE WEBxtra brought Martin Theophilus of the Museum of Magnetic Recording to talk about the more than 250 reel-to-reel recorders he has in his collection. Begun in 1998 with a website to provide historical information on magnetic sound recording devices, his collection grew and added more than 100 vintage microphones, wire recorders and other technologies. Martin will talk to us about his private collection and the now defunct plans to build a public museum. SBE Social Networking Committee Chair Kirk Harnack, CBRE, CBNE, will lead the conversation.

Magnetic recording on tape was developed in Germany during WWII to record high-speed telegraphy for later analysis. The Tonschreiber b1 is one of the early models. The technology was brought to the United States after the war and further developed.

The MOMSR collection includes recorders from Akai, Ampex, Ampro, Brush, Concertone, Magnecord, MCI, Otari, Studer, ReVox, Telefunken, Wollensak 3M and many more.

There are also acoustic, cassette, magnetic film and wire recorders in the collection. The microphone collection includes models from Akai, AKG, Altec, American Microphone, Astatic, Calrad, Electro-Voice, Neumann, RCA, Shure, Webster and others.

The collection is housed in Austin, TX. Some pieces of the collection are displayed on loan to other locations.

For on demand, we’ll also try to provide a link on the SBE Chapters Facebook group and on the SBE YouTube Channel .

LEADERSHIP SKILLS

The July SBE WEBxtra brings Rodney Vandeveer to talk with Social Networking Committee Chair Kirk Harnack, CBRE, CBNE, about the importance of leadership skills. Rodney will discuss many of the ideas covered in the SBE Leadership Development Course, an event the SBE has presented since 1997. The intense course is designed specifically for broadcast engineers who have or aspire to have management responsibilities. Rodney Vandeveer has led the course for many years. He is a professional leadership and management trainer and a retired emeritus professor of organizational leadership and supervision at Purdue University.
During the SBE WEBxtra, Rodney and Kirk will discuss the lessons of the popular SBE course, including effective communication, leadership being an attitude, discovering your own leadership management style, building a winning team, the foundations of leadership, and more.
Because of COVID-19, the 2020 class planned for August was postponed until spring 2021. Watch the WEBxtra and gain some insight about the class and pick up some leadership tips right now.
There may be a link on the SBE Chapters Facebook group and also stream it on the SBE YouTube channel.

CBRE, CBNT, SBE Social Networking Committee Chair Kirk Harnack, CBRE, CBNE, and SBE Member Communications Director Chriss Scherer, CPBE, CBNT, together to discussed the new normal of working remotely as the world continues to deal with the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak.

What are the permanent changes from all this? Will we see a more decentralized setup of broadcast operations? Connectivity now is much better in many places now than it was previously. And while web cams and USB mics are harder to obtain right now, that will change in time. More remote tools will likely be developed and installed as well.

With the remote connections comes longer delays, especially when video is used. Higher quality typically means longer delays, so what’s the compromise? Join us as we discuss these and other considerations for what may become the new way of broadcast operations.

There is a recording on the SBE YouTube channel.

We take our video cameras inside — to the Glass Enclosed Nerve Center, the WTOP editor’s desk, the specialized production and support studios, and the technical operations center where this big AoIP-based specialty media facility.

We learn from WTOP Technical Operations Manager Brian Oliger about the design philosophy behind the project, and from RadioDNA President Rob Goldberg about the installation and integration challenges.

WTOP is a special success story. It was again the nation’s top-billing radio station in 2018, according to BIA Advisory Services; it was the only station in the top 10 that is not located in New York, L.A. and Chicago, and the only one not owned by iHeart or Cumulus; and it is consistently the No. 1 station in Nielsen’s 12+ ratings in Washington, a market of almost 5 million people.
Now it has a home worthy of its history and reputation. Come with us on a visit. The webinar took place on Wednesday, August 28th but it is now available on demand. Click here to register to watch at your convenience. The video runs for about an hour.
